The alternative genre was begun for quite a simple reason -- many new music artists began looking for a way to stand out from their classic rock predecessors. Thus, they began to carve out the rules as a reaction to all the rock music that had come before, creating an alternative to the "norm." Under the influence of eighties bands like Nirvana and R.E.M., rock staples like guitar solos were kicked to the curb in favor of louder music, more unique lyrics, and new ways of delivering vocals; for Kurt Cobain, this meant practically screaming his lines, and for Michael Stipe, this meant slurring his lyrics to such an extent that no one could ever truly be certain of what he was saying. Alternative songs swept the airwaves by the early nineties, and before long, this genre became so big that a new generation of musicians needed to rebel against the very music -- alternative music -- that was defined by its very nature as different than what was accepted as popular and normal. Even though alternative rock music has ceased, for the most part, to be "cutting edge" or innovative, there are still many artists and bands who continue to write and record alternative music. As with many forms of rock, alternative music generally translates ver well into an acoustic rock format. The acoustic guitar, when used properly, proves that a good song is a good song. Some songs fall apart when reduced to acoustic simplicity and others shine -- this is what sets the quality tracks and tunes apart.

What is indie music? Indie, short for independent, music is comprised of new music artists and albums that are released on underground labels. Major artists are produced and distributed by major labels, such as Capital and Columbia. Smaller, more homegrown songwriters turn to smaller labels that are more willing to do more to promote them as they grow and experiment. Typically, indie music songwriters are the ones you won't hear on the radio, but that you will see taking the time and energy to post YouTube videos and play cheaper shows to further their music and gain more fans. Independent artists are willing to try what hasn't been tried before, or to combine different songwriting elements that haven't typically been used together in the past.
