The 1950s (hereafter referred to as the Fifties or the 50s) contained the birth of rock’n’roll music. Sure, the decade started out with more traditional music, like Frank Sinatra’s “standards” and country and western music from Gene Autry, but on the Laptop Sessions acoustic cover songs music video blog, we focus on more of the rock music aspect of the decade. The originators of rock music like Buddy Holly, Bobby Helms, Chuck Berry, and many others all gained popularity in the 1950s. The funny part is that rock music was just considered a fad at the time. In the mid-50s when Elvis burst onto the scene, the music he came out with was raw and untamed. It was truly what the country needed to get out of the strings and crooning of popular music at the time. Don’t’ get me wrong, Bing Crosby is great to listen to now and again, but the songs are so “middle of the road”, it’s tough to distinguish the songs or even their singers! But, after a few years of pure rock’n’roll classics like “Rock Around the Clock”, “Johnny B Goode”, and “Jailhouse Rock”, rock music all but died in the late 50s. Elvis went off to war, Buddy Holly passed away, and the music started sounding stale and formulaic. Just listen to a radio station that plays rock music from the 50s (if you can find one)- you’ll find yourself having a hard time distinguishing between any Jerry Lee Lewis songs. They all sound the same! In fact, rock music didn’t really make a comeback until the Beatles brought that more raw sound back in the early 60s. The Beach Boys gave a breath of fresh air to the genre, but the music was still tame and innocent. But, the decade of the 1950s will always be synonymous with rock music, as that’s where it all began!
