Many singers and songwriters in the 1960s turned to folk music for inspiration in making a brand new sound. Some of these artists were fans of folk music growing up, so it was only natural to put a rock’n’roll spin on many of their favorite folk-music classics. People like Al Jardine of the Beach Boys were big advocates of this practice, like when he recorded “Cottonfields” (an old Leadbelly song) and persuaded Brian Wilson to record a rock version “Sloop John B”, an old traditional song Brian crafted into a masterpiece (and a Top 5 Billboard Hot 100 hit) for his opus, “Pet Sounds”. Many people consider the Byrds to be pioneers in the folk rock genre, as they took Bob Dylan’s famous acoustic folk songs and turned them into jangly, harmonizing, electric pop hits. If you listen to Bob Dylan’s original version of “Mr. Tambourine Man”, it’s a much different song than the one the Byrds recorded and sent to #1 on the Billboard charts. The Byrd’s version has basically just one compound verse, while Dylan’s folk version is much longer. Dylan probably didn’t appreciate the truncating of his lyrics at the time, but it didn’t seem to bother him much, as he joined the ranks of folk-rock musicians only a short time later. I guess sometimes it’s better to conform than to be lost to history, after all! The folk-rock trend died down pretty quickly, as straight-up rock music came to the forefront later in the 60s. But, there are still bands out there that consider themselves lighter folk-rockers.
