Rock music didn’t exist in the 1940s (hereafter referred to as the 40s or the Forties), but we still dug deep into the songbook of history on the Laptop Sessions acoustic cover songs music video blog. Being that we cover mostly rock songs, there aren’t too many choices for us from the 1940s, as most of the popular songs from that decade fell into a bigger band “swing” kind of sound or a country and western acoustic sound. We’ve chosen a few songs from the country and western genre of the 1940s from the likes of Gene Autry, Hank Williams, and Woody Guthrie. But, to be honest, many of the songs we’ve chosen to cover from the 40s are actually covers themselves! Popular musicians like Bob Dylan covered Woody Guthrie songs, so we took the Bob Dylan version and adapted it for our music blog. There’s also some great holiday songs (Christmas songs) that originally were written and sung in the 1940s. Irving Berlin wrote one of the most famous Christmas songs of all time in “White Christmas”. But even then, it’s not really an Irving Berlin song- the popular version is from Bing Crosby. And his version ended-up being the most popular recording ever. Even to this day, Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas” holds the record for most sales of a song. And since it jumps back into people’s minds every holiday season, I don’t really see that record being surpassed any time soon! So, that’s about it for our cover songs from the forties- it would be another decade before rock music came around, but the famous singers of the time made “popular” music what it was meant to be- broadcasted to the masses and known by most people across the country. And who knows- you may hear us doing a version of a Frank Sinatra song from the 40s sometime soon! And I think it would be a great addition to the music blog!
