Grunge new music artists delighted in differing from the "norm," not only in their music but also in their apparel. In addition to their songwriting and recording new music, members of grunge bands dressed in ripped flannel and jeans with holes torn in them. Eventually, much of their fashion made its way into the mainstream, becoming a trend and ironically ending the original intention of the "grunge" appearance. One of the most popular grunge bands, Nirvana, became so popular that frontman Kurt Cobain was raised to celebrity status and this new music rock band's fame was enough to springboard Dave Grohl into success in his next band, the Foo Fighters. Other grunge songwriters were more underground, like Elliott Smith. Smith earned great respect among his peers and created a truly unique sound for his new rock music, particularly carving out a signature acoustic guitar sound.
