Cover Songs by Progressive Rock Artists: Singers, Musicians, and Songwriters

Progressive rock, or prog rock for short, is one genre in many that have a tendency to blend together somewhat. After the British invasion and the folk rock and rock'n'roll explosions of the 1960s, many artists began to experiment with new arrangements, sounds, and ideas that would cause fans of new music to respect the songwriting and musicianship of rock artists. Thus, the progressive rock movement was formed, partially out of the psychedelic rock movement of the late Sixties. Artists like the Moody Blues and Pink Floyd not only introduced new instruments and sounds to their albums, but also began recording songs that would fit together into larger concepts. The Moody Blues, starting with Days of Future Passed, recorded a series of concept albums with unprecedented facets that truly elevated their music to the level of art.

Any serious music fan has to appreciate the concept of progressively improving and expanding the range and effects of rock music. Still, a song is a song when stripped down and translated to acoustic guitar only. The Laptop Sessions cover song blog features many songs by progressive rock bands, heard here in rare minimalist form. This is a true sign of a great song -- that it can pass the "acoustic guitar music" test. It is considerably easier to make a new music track entertaining and amazing with a full band and a series of overdubs, but it can be quite another for the song to be played by one person with an acoustic guitar. Which songs pass the test? Watch these free cover song music videos -- hosted as YouTube videos -- and decide for yourself!
