The 2000s- who could forget the ìY2Kî bug that never affected anything? I think many people thought they would hear something fresh, new, and different in the new millennium. It always sounded so futuristic. But, the decade was a bit of a let-down in terms of new rock music. Sure, all of our favorites from decades-passed made new music in the decade. You had Ben Folds venturing out on his own after Ben Folds Five broke up in 2000. Barenaked Ladies, Goo Goo Dolls, and Lenny Kravitz were putting out solid music in the decade. It wasnít too exciting otherwise, save for a few bright spots. You had some new artists come on the scene like Brett Dennen. Thereís a very talented songwriter that just makes good rock music. Itís so rare to find these days! Michelle Branch came around in the 2000s. Her impressive songwriting was a big surprise at the start of the decade. But, again, the biggest story of the 2000s was the continuing success of bands originally popular in the 1990s. Take Matchbox Twenty, for example. Everyone was a fan of their wildly popular hits from the 90s and that popularity continued into the 2000s and beyond! As people from the MTV generation grew up, they never let go of their favorite artists, much like what happened to the fans of musicians and bands from the 1960s that still made music over 50 years later. A big addition to the music scene in the 2000s was soft-rocker Jack Johnson. His mellow Hawaiian attitude was a big change from anything popular music heard before. And then you had the Black Eyed Peas, which really revolutionized dance music in the 2000s. Their hits were played everywhere- it seemed like every time they released a song, it would turn to gold. The electronica craze doesnít seem to be going anywhere, especially now that the electronic sounds are getting more and more sophisticated than they were in the 80s. Enough talk- letís get down to business!
